I've found the resource I need to explain how we got here to anyone who asks. This picture (which does in fact also have a lot of words in it) is worth hours or even days of my time saved:

The way it shows cause-and-effect agrees with my understanding and experience, and the quote callouts are valuable and well-chosen, if excruciating to read in hindsight.
