Just 6 days after the $85 billion federal bailout of AIG was rushed through to save the insurer that was too big to fail, top corporate executives treated themselves to a 9-day, $443,000 retreat at St. Regis Bay Resort in Monarch Beach, California.
That said, we need to ask ourselves... why so cheap AIG? You have $85 billion!
Here's where they should have gone to spend all that hard-pandered taxpayer bailout money.
1. Dubai's Hydropolis Deep Sea Resort
Opening in 2009, the Hydropolis underwater hotel is the perfect place to get away from it all. With over 220 suites, dazzling marine architecture, and a beautiful view of Dubai's underwater oceanscape, the Hydropolis offers guests an exotic, relaxing place to spend the government's money.
2. Sir Richard Branson's Private Island
Where does Virgin's founder, Sir Richard Branson, go for some R&R? How about the luxurious Necker Island, with all you can eat gourmet food anywhere at anytime, and beautiful beach bungalow houses starting at only $47,000 a night. It's not just a vacation spot, it's a taxpayer mandate.
3. Buckingham Palace
Time to send the Queen a packin'. AIG can stick it to the mortgage crisis by buying up the Buckingham palace. Property includes a modest 830,000 sq ft. of floorspace perfect for meetings and games of cricket through the master bedroom.
4. Neuschwanstein Castle
Maybe the Buckingham Palace doesn't quite capture that Neverending Story feeling that AIG needs for their motivational retreats. The scenic splendor of the Neuschwanstein Castle gracing the Bavarian skyline has not been made available to tourists by the State of Bavaria as a hotel, but with a few billion dollars AIG should be able to do some convincing.
5. Outer Space
While still undergoing construction, the Virgin Galactic promises to be the first commercial space-touring aircraft. Prices haven't been set as of yet, but conservative estimates range in the $20 million per person range. When things too hot back on earth, it's time to take the team to the final frontier.
