Why The West Will Stay The Best: How John Wayne and Tony Soprano Drive American MigrationLike a million others of my countrymen, I watched (and heartily cursed) the Sopranos finale Sunday night. Dead leaves, grey skies, leaden streets. I grew up back East, in a pretty suburb of Boston, but I remember slush in bus station gutters and North End row houses viewed from the T. This only is what millions of Westerners know about the East.
To Easterners, the West is cowboys and Indians and Mexicans sleeping underneath saguaros wearing sombreros. To Westerners, the East is mobsters and Rockefellers living in an industrial wasteland.
For millions of people across the country and the world, movies and media show them what they know of the American West.
However, they are not sure that this space and light exist as they see it in the movies. That's the difference between the West and the East: if Sopranos viewers from Wyoming go to Newark, it's not going to look any different from what they see on TV. They know what they're going to get. If Easterners come West, they're not really sure if anything that beautiful and empty could possibly exist in real life.
That's the real explanation behind numbers in a report issued recently by NAI Global. The Southwest is expected to lead the nation in population growth through 2020, according to the report. People are moving to the region for a better quality of life, it said.
