Stocks End Lower While Merger Mania Continues
PICTURED BELOW: The Bank ($BKX -0.85%) and Broker/Dealer ($XBD +0.50%) indexes have managed to repair their previous violations of key moving average lines. The improvement in financial stocks generally bodes well from the broader market outlook since financial shares are considered a leading indicator.

Though shares of Texas Instruments rally this morning, U.S. stock futures fail to generate momentum. Juniper, Target outlooks could prove difficult.

Yesterday, after a very strong previous week, the major averages pulled back to digest their recent gains. Monday's volume totals were lighter on both major US exchanges as the major averages pulled back, which was encouraging in that the lighter trading activity helped the major averages avoid another distribution day. Breadth was slightly negative as decliners led advancers by a 17-to-16 ratio on the NYSE but by a wider 18-to-13 ratio on the Nasdaq exchange. The number of new 52-week highs still solidly trumped new 52-week lows on both exchanges.

Yesterday, the Biotechnology Index ($BTK +1.50%) was one of the day's standout gainers. The Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.52%) posted a modest gain while the Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.06%) barely edged higher. The Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.67%) lagged other tech areas while the Software ($GSO -0.14%) and Internet ($DOT -0.12%) indexes also ended slightly lower, yet the Networking Index ($NWX +0.18%) posted a small gain. There was also a slight gain for the Healthcare ($HMO +0.11%) group. Losses for the Retail ($RLX -0.55%) and Gold & Silver ($XAU -0.75%) indexes created a drag and resulted in a negative bias for the major averages.
