Today's Open: Down And S&P Five-Star Rated Stocks

Seesaw Session on Wall Street
PICTURED BELOW: The S&P 500 Index bounced right at support offered by its 50-day moving average (DMA) line. However, light volume behind the benchmark index's latest gains is a worrisome sign that buying demand is not as intense as the selling pressure that the market recently encountered. Additional distribution days could pose a more serious threat to the market's ongoing rally, and violations of the recent chart lows would very likely lead to greater downward momentum in equities. That's why it will be important to see the major indices find support near their 50 DMA lines.

"U.S. stocks headed toward a moderately lower opening Tuesday ahead of a profit report from Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc."

Yesterday, the influential financial stocks traded with a positive bias as the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +0.51%) and the Bank Index ($BKX +0.40%) posted modest gains. The tech sector was mixed while the Software Index ($GSO +0.13%), Networking Index ($NWX +0.28%), and Biotechnology Index ($BTK +0.13%) posted small gains, yet the Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.41%) and Internet Index ($DOT -0.22%) ended with small losses. Stocks in the energy group got a lukewarm reception as the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.36%) and Integrated Oil Index ($XOI +0.97%) posted modest gains. The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.72%) traded up, and the Healthcare ($HMO +0.05%) group ended virtually unchanged.
