Most investors know that October has been home to some of the worst days in stock market history, most notably crashes in 1929 and 1987, and a 554-point drop for the Dow Jones Industrial Average on October 27, 1997. But fewer investors are aware that, ahead of October’s ghostly past, September is historically the worst month for stock market performance. Since 1950, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down an average 1.1% in September and the S&P 500® is down 0.7%, according to the Stock Trader’s Almanac—by far the worst monthly performance for both averages.
The Wall Street Journal as mini-Bloomberg: The Markets Data Center has information on everything from currencies to commodities, from indexes to calendars, from past and future POs and their performance to even a really good Economic Indicators Archive. The more you surf the Journal site, the more you find that you like. The Journal even has a mutual fund screener.
