Stocks Shake Off Earlier Weakness

The major averages overcame earlier weakness, which reiterates the underlying strength of the market. However, weakness in the final hour erased the major indices' late-afternoon gains and they ended with small losses. Nasdaq's volume total was near that of the prior session while the volume total was lighter than the prior session on the NYSE and volume was lighter than average across the board, largely due to the shortened holiday week. Breadth was slightly negative as decliners led advancers by an 18-to-14 margin on the NYSE and by a 18-to-13 margin on the Nasdaq exchange.

The S&P 500 Index ended lower on lighter volume:

The Gold & Silver Index ($XAU +0.74%) was a pace-setting gainer on another below average volume session marked by little in the way of decisive action among the various industry groups. The financial group drifted to a modestly lower as the Bank ($BKX -0.39%) and Broker/Dealer ($XBD -0.36%) indexes finished with small losses. There were small gains for the Networking ($NWX +0.12%) and Biotechnology ($BTK +0.22%) indexes and small losses for the Internet ($DOT -0.33%), Software ($GSO -0.11%), and Semiconductor ($SOX -0.21%) indexes. The Retail Index ($RLX -0.20%) also finished modestly lower. The energy group was also quiet as the Oil Services ($OSX -0.19%) and Integrated Oil ($XOI +0.02%) indexes were indecisive, and there was almost no change for the Healthcare ($HMO +0.05%) group.

Here is what I wrote two weeks ago: The Stock Market Looks Good

From Dr. Brett: Bottom Line: We saw selling for the first time during this holiday week, but not enough to change the market's short-term uptrend. I'll be watching for signs of waning momentum on any tests of this week's highs and will continue to watch for divergences as we test the bull market highs in the large cap indices.
