U.S. stock futures slip amid foreign lender''s woes

"U.S. stock futures dropped Friday after data showing that employment actually contracted during August, with Harley-Davidson slashing its earnings forecast and former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan saying he sees parallels between the current situation and the stock-market crash of 1987."

Gold for December delivery closed $2.80 lower at $717.90 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange, recouping some of its losses after dropping to a low of $712.

The influential Retail Index ($RLX +2.06%) and financial stocks helped give a boost to the major averages on Thursday, with the Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD +2.58%) and Bank Index ($BKX +1.28%) posting solid gains. The Gold & Silver ($XAU +1.16%) and Integrated Oil ($XOI +1.00%) indexes tacked on gains while the Oil Services Index ($OSX +0.09%) only edged higher. The Networking Index ($NWX -1.97%) was a standout laggard in the tech sector while the Biotechnology Index ($BTK -0.49%) and Semiconductor Index ($SOX -0.41%) ended with smaller losses. The Internet Index ($DOT +0.11%) closed slightly higher.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average managed to close a few points above its 50-day moving average (DMA) line on Thursday. The Retail Index ($RLX +2.06%) ended off its session high while trying to rally up to its 50-day moving average (DMA) line, where it stalled on its prior rally attempt.

Every Fed interest tightening of the past 50 years has led to some form of financial crisis -- this one, too. But we''ve also recovered handsomely from each one. And stocks have gone higher.
