U.S. stock futures weaken further after Thursday's plunge

"U.S. Stocks Head for Lower Open Amid Continued Credit Concerns; Central Banks Add Liquidity."

Gold for December delivery closed down $13.50, or 2%, at $672.80 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That was the contract's weakest closing level since July 27.

Widespread weakness returned and weighed on most groups, especially hurting highly influential financial shares. The Bank ($BKX -3.95%) and Broker/Dealer ($XBD -3.66%) indexes were among Thursday's largest decliners, and the Retail Index ($RLX -3.80%) also fell precipitously. The energy group also dropped considerably as the Integrated Oil ($XOI -3.37%) and Oil Services ($OSX -2.88%) indexes endured large losses. The Networking ($NWX -2.48%) and Internet ($DOT -2.30%) indexes, two of the stronger tech indices this year, fell harder than the Biotechnology ($BTK -1.17%) and Semiconductor ($SOX -0.66%) indexes. The Healthcare ($HMO -2.82%) group, after it was a standout laggard on the prior session, continued falling further and hit new 2007 lows.
