Mesa mayor to view study on emerging West
from the East Valley Tribune, reports that this week, the Brookings Institution will be unveiling a new study on 5 emerging regions in the West. The study examined the Sun Corridor, which covers six counties and key cities including Phoenix, Mesa and Tucson, as well as four other emerging mega metropolitan regions in the west Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. Mesa mayor Scott Smith said, "This study will help begin discussions on significant growth issues we are facing here. The Phoenix, Tucson corridor isn't joined together physically but realistically to compete in the global market, we need to join hands." Study researchers noted the collaboration between Arizona State University and the University of Arizona in bringing together a medical school in downtown Phoenix is a prime example of the need to mesh resources together.

“The construction and operation of buildings generate half of all greenhouse-gas emissions in the country, according to estimates based on data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Residential buildings alone account for 21% of national energy consumption -- nearly as much as transportation (27%)… California's Marin County, now insists that all large houses meet the energy budget of a 3,500-square-foot home. [In] Aspen, Colorado… any new home larger than 5,000-sf faces special renewable-energy requirements. McGraw-Hill Construction/National Association of Home Builders study: The market for green housing will grow to from as little as $12 billion this year to between $40B$70B by 2012.” (WRCB TV, July 20th)
