Welcome to September from The Kirk Report
Most investors know that October has been home to some of the worst days in stock market history, most notably crashes in 1929 and 1987, and a 554-point drop for the Dow Jones Industrial Average on October 27, 1997. But fewer investors are aware that, ahead of October’s ghostly past, September is historically the worst month for stock market performance. Since 1950, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down an average 1.1% in September and the S&P 500 is down 0.7%, according to the Stock Trader’s Almanac—by far the worst monthly performance for both averages.
