Friday's Market Open: News & Notes
"Stocks pointed to a higher opening Friday as investors reacted favorably to stronger-than-expected earnings from Google Inc. and Honeywell International Inc."
Gold futures dropped $5 an ounce Thursday to close at their lowest level in a week, as news of faster-than-expected growth in China in the first quarter triggered worries that the government will have to take measures to slow down its economy, reducing demand for metals.
Yesterday, there were modest gains for the Semiconductor ($SOX +0.62%) and Biotechnology ($BTK +0.67%) indexes, but the broader market action was mostly negative. The Software ($GSO -0.81%), Internet ($DOT -0.50%), and Networking ($NWX -0.47%) indexes suffered small losses. Energy shares showed weakness as the Oil Services ($OSX -1.07%) and Integrated Oil ($XOI -0.81%) indexes were among the negative indexes. The Healthcare ($HMO -1.25%) group also slumped. The Broker/Dealer Index ($XBD -0.55%) showed a small loss, meanwhile the Bank ($BKX -0.12%) and Retail ($RLX -0.11%) indexes ended the session only slightly in the red.
