Wholesale Prices Jump 1 Percent in March

"Wholesale prices shot up by 1 percent in March, mostly reflecting more expensive gasoline and food. The sizable increase in the Producer Price Index, which measures the costs of goods before they reach stores shelves, came after a 1.3 percent spike in February, the Labor Department reported Friday."

Gold futures gained Friday, as rising crude-oil prices and the falling dollar boosted demand for the precious metal. Gold for June delivery rose $6.10 at $685.80 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Other metals prices also posted gains. May silver added 21 cents at $14.07 an ounce, July platinum rose $1.50 at $1,281.0 an ounce and June palladium added 15 cents at $374.45 an ounce. May copper was up 4.25 cents at $2.5450 a pound.

Yesterday, the Biotech ($BTK +2.53%), Oil Services ($OSX +1.91%), and Integrated Oil ($XOI +1.63%) were solid gainers that had a positive impact on the major averages. Meanwhile, the Bank ($BKX -0.16%) was a standout laggard. The Nasdaq Composite closed near its intra day high as solid gains in the tech sector included the Semiconductor ($SOX +0.98%), Software ($GSO +0.95%), and Internet ($DOT +0.55%) indexes. Modest gains also appeared in the Retail ($RLX +0.48%), Networking ($NWX +0.48%), Broker/Dealer ($XBD +0.34%), Healthcare ($HMO +0.30%) and Gold & Silver ($XAU +0.15%).
