Here's an ETF variation on the simple asset allocation of the original, using suggestions from Schultheis, Morningstar, Vanguard and Barclays for ETFs to substitute for the original Vanguard index funds:
- (40%) Bond Market Index or iShares Lehman Aggregate (AGG)
- (10%) Standard & Poor's 500 or iShares S&P 500 (IVV)
- (10%) Large-Cap Value Index or iShares S&P/BARRA Value (IVE)
- (10%) Small-Cap Index or iShares Morningstar Small Core (JKJ)
- (10%) Small-Cap Value Index or iShares Russell 2000 Value (IWN)
- (10%) International Stock Index or iShares MSCI EAFE (EFA)
- (10%) REIT Index or iShares Dow Jones Real Estate (IYR)
I would tweak it ever so slightly by reducing the bonds to about 20% and add a commodities/natural resources fund.
With the help of this ETF screen, you can gauge which sector the money is flowing to and which exchange traded fund is making cumulative new highs. SECTOR ETFs
