Irs Among Feds Investigating Gop Senator
Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in the U.S. Senate, is under investigation by the FBI, IRS and Interior Department in connection with a political corruption case.
Federal lawmen on Monday raided the 83-year-old Alaskan's personal home in the ski resort area of Girdwood. Of apparent interest to officials who served the search warrant are Steven's ties to an Alaska energy services company, Veco. That company's chief executive has pleaded guilty to a bribery scheme involving state lawmakers.
The Washington Post has published a time line of the Steven's investigation.
Last year, Stevens gained recognition beyond Alaska's borders when he succeeded in getting $223 million in federal money to build the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere" in his state.
While Stevens has not been charged with anything, if the materials collected during the raid on his home Monday result in further legal action, the Senator could find his planned run for another six-year term in 2008 imperiled.
