Scam Alert: Secured loan fraud
Posted on 08/01/2006 11:40 AM | Link | Post Comment
It seems like fraudsters will never stop coming up with new ways to scam consumers. Today, we&39;re talking about advanced-fee loan scams which are apparently becoming a popular trend in fraud.
With this scheme, a "lender" calls you offering a a guaranteed loan (or sometimes credit card). All you need to do is wire over a few hundred dollars to secure the loan or purchase insurance. You send the money...the lender disappears. This scam preys on consumers with credit troubles who are often desperate to borrow money and willing to take a chance on an unknown lender.
Credit.com has recently received some alarming reports about this type of fraud. A company calling themselves "FairView Financial" based in Maine has been soliciting consumers and requesting wire transfers to a Canadian account. We&39;ve posted some information about this scam and a few warnings online here.
If you are contacted by FairView Financial or any unfamiliar lender, keep these things in mind:
Do not provide any sensitive personal information or discuss your personal financial situation.
Ask the solicitor to send you all the details of their offer in writing. This not only documents their offer but could help to prosecute scammers under "Mail Fraud" laws.
Neither mail nor wire funds without fully investigating the company&39;s background and authenticity.
