Funny Money Friday: Three wishes
Money doesn&39;t have to be boring! Each week, CreditBloggers.com
takes a look at the lighter side of the personal finance world in a
series called Funny Money Friday.
It&39;s easy to get frustrated with the credit world
these days. Sometimes it seems like the whole financial system is set up to be as confusing and hard for consumers as possible. I hear horror stories about serious identity theft, damaging medical bills and unruly collection agencies from our readers all the time.
For this week&39;s Funny Money Friday, we&39;re going to do a little day dreaming. If a genie granted you three wishes for changing the credit world, what would you wish for? Here are my three wishes:
- Better collection rules - The collection world has it far too easy. First off, almost anything can be sent to collections. Medical bills, video store rental fees, library late fees, parking tickets, gym membership fees...almost any kind of debt can be sold to collections. And a $25 library fee that was sent to collections will have just as much damage to you credit score as a $20,000 medical debt in collections. I wish for rules that would make it hard to sell debts to collections, protections for consumers dealing with expensive medical debts and more oversight for the way collection agencies communicate and report to the bureaus.
- A payday lending system that works - I guess I could wish that no one would ever have to turn to payday loans, but that is unfortunately not a reality in our current economy. Whether you like it or not, millions of borrowers use cash advance (aka payday) loans to cover emergency expenses. Since there are few laws that really regulate this industry many borrowers end up getting into deep debt trouble. I wish for a national law that would establish reasonable rates and repayment terms for short term loans. This way borrowers could still get the money they need, but wouldn&39;t go into a financial tailspin at the same time.
- A better disputing system - Even with recent advances, the credit bureaus use a pretty archaic system for investigating disputes. Basically, you send in a complaint and they check to see if it is true with the creditor. It is your word against the creditors. I wish that the credit bureaus could use their own records to investigate inaccuracies and that they would put a little more faith in the consumer&39;s report.
What are your three wishes? No more foreign currency conversion fees? Lower credit card rates? Bursting the housing bubble? Getting rid of insurance risk scores? Share your wishes in the comments section below! Happy Friday!
