Funny Money Friday: Life Takes Visa, Literally

Money doesn&39;t have to be boring! Each week, CreditBloggers.com takes a look at the lighter side of the personal finance world in a series called Funny Money Friday.

Later this summer, a new edition of the Game of Life will hit toy store shelves. This game will feature credit cards instead of cash in a collaboration between Hasbro and VISA. Called "Twists and Turns," the goal of the game is to earn "life points" instead of to see who can retire with the most cash.

"Lyons sees the game both as a way to get the brand in front of parents and kids and as a way to increase awareness of the company&39;s ongoing program promoting financial literacy. The game has been redesigned to include elements of Visa&39;s financial literacy curriculum Practical Money Skills for Life. It will also include literature about the curriculum that has been adopted by the state governments of Indiana and West Virginia."

While I love the idea of teaching kids financial literacy, I&39;m not so appreciative of VISA marketing to ages 9 and up (VISA has also replaced cash in a new edition of Monopoly). Kids may be learning more about branding and product placement strategy than actual personal finance here. I doubt that the game includes such realities of credit use as overdraft fees, universal default clauses and FICO scores. What would have been really interesting is a game with both cash and credit that encouraged making smart decisions about when paying those high APR&39;s might make sense.
