I am a 27 year old engineer/entrepreneur in the mid-west.  I’m married to a wonderful woman, and live in a modest house.  We have two cats and no kids (yet).  I graduated from college and landed an engineering position right out of college, and realized that my desk was taking me nowhere fast.  Being a small company of four engineers, there were no promotions to be had, no possibility to make my way up the corporate ladder, and I was never free to use my imagination.  The company was micro-managed into oblivion, which made it hard to look forward to going to work.

I jumped ship and never looked back. When people say they jumped ship, they really mean they jumped into another job. Me?  I really jumped ship.  I had no job lined up, and no idea what I wanted to do, but I knew I didn’t want to work for anyone but myself.  Also, I knew that it would never get any easier to leave, as I was getting more and more attached to the paycheck day by day.

So that’s where I am.  I’m out here working for myself, and loving it.  I’m taking a little slice of a lot of different pies, and trying to figure out which one I like the best.  I’ve always wanted to buy some investment property, but always found a way to talk myself out of it.  Finally one day, I just did it.  I found a great little house less than 100 yards from a local university, and did the deal.  We’ll see how it goes, but it’s a start. I’m also trying to turn my measly stock portfolio into something more than measly, and I try to manage my retirement fund without trying to over-engineer it to death.
