That Is Some Tough Luck - South Boston Church Condos Catch Fire

Posted on 05/31/2007 16:56:31 | Link | Post Comment

The church at 45-55 West Broadway in South Boston were converted into condos back around 2003.

Today, it caught on fire.

A two-alarm fire ripped through a former church in South Boston early this morning, forcing residents living in the 36 converted condominiums to flee into the street.

It took 60 firefighters to douse the blaze, which was difficult to extinguish because of the high ceilings and steep slate roof, according to Fire Captain Richard Parker. For more than 100 years the building was known as Saints Peter and Paul Church.

It took awhile for them to sell those condos - prices were higher than the neighborhood had ever seen (this predates Court Square Press / Macallen Building) and it's just a fact that not everyone wants to live in an old church.

Two units are currently for sale in the building. I'm sure the owners of those two units are having an especially tough day, today.
