Dear Wampanoag: I’m Un-inviting You
So, the Mayor wants to turn Suffolk Downs into a casino, preferably run by the Wampanoag Tribe.
According to the Globe:
Mayor Thomas M. Menino, seizing on an apparent impasse in casino negotiations between the town of Middleborough and the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, gamely invited the tribe today to build its gambling complex at the Suffolk Downs racetrack in East Boston.
Let me be the first to take back the "peace pipe", by saying:
No to casino gambling in the city of Boston, in the Commonwealth, for that matter, by anyone, Native American or otherwise.
Fortunately, it's not a done deal:
The Wampanoag would have to jump some significant hurdles to take up the mayor's offer, including the US Department of the Interior's 50-mile rule, which limits the Indian-owned casino to land within a 50-mile radius of the Wampanoag tribal land on Cape Cod.
If you want to discuss further, I'll see you at Foxwoods.
It's only a two-hour drive if you want to gamble. Let's keep it that way.
