Commuter’s Dream: A Nice Cheap Home, $20,000 (usd)
As this Wall Street Journal story explains, Newfoundland is becoming very appealing for Canadians and Americans looking for serenity at low prices.
And, only 2,400 miles from Boston.
Up and down the rock-ribbed coast of Newfoundland in centuries-old fishing villages like this one, Americans and Europeans are taking advantage of a warming climate and a struggling regional economy to buy seaside summer homes for the price of a used SUV.
Even with the Canadian dollar hitting a 30-year-high against the U.S. dollar, saltbox cottages on the Atlantic side can be found for as little as $10,000 ... The average price of a small seaside home in rural Newfoundland is about $40,000.
Newfoundlanders attribute their hospitality to the remoteness and isolation of the island &8212; it's the size of California with just two thirds the population of San Francisco &8212; and the ruggedness of the land. "People depend on each other here," says Cal King, who runs the Harbor View Restaurant up the road from Mr. Costantino's home. "We've been clinging to this rock for 500 years, this is our heritage, it's how we survived."
Not many United States citizens know about Newfoundland (even fewer know that it's now officially "Newfoundland and Labrador).
For your information, here is a list of the ten provinces and three territories that make up Canada:
Newfoundland and Labrador
Nova Scotia
Prince Edward Island
New Brunswick
Ontario
Quebec
Alberta
British Columbia
Manitoba
Saskatchewan
Nunavut
Northwest Territories
Yukon
You're welcome.
